Karen moved to Saturna in 1977 and lived there full time for over 30 years, participating in many facets of community life. She now divides her time between Victoria and Saturna. She studied graphic design and worked in that field before starting to paint more and design less. Her work has evolved from representational watercolours to the current abstract work in acrylic, interspersed with stints of printmaking. On Saturna she participates in the ArtSaturna group and contributes to their blog at artsaturna.blogspot.ca and prints.
Gabriel Crystalline Pottery
Moneca and her son, Braedon create unique crystalline glaze pottery in their studio on Pender Island. Each piece is made on the potters wheel, fired, glazed and fired again. In an array of beautiful colours, their pieces, large and small, are sold exclusively on Pender Island. Moneca can be found at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings May through to Thanksgiving. Select pieces can be found at the Talisman Books and Gallery at the Driftwood but the best selection can be found at their home studio in Magic Lake.
Art of Terrill Welch Gallery
Visit Internationally collected landscape painter & one of Mayne Island’s finest. Open mid April to mid November on Fri, Sat, Sun & holiday Mondays 11 – 4 and by appointment year round.
Terrill Welch’s oil paintings frequently showcase the beautiful, mysterious and rugged southwest coast around her home on Mayne Island B.C. as well as paintings from her travels. Though locally appreciated, Terrill Welch is internationally collected. Her paintings can be found in the homes of art collectors throughout Canada and the United States as well as in Australia, England, France, Italy, Norway and Switzerland.
Terrill Welch’s work is in collections that also include such renowned Canadian landscape painters as Emily Carr, A.Y. Jackson and Lawren Harris.
Born in the village of Vanderhoof in north-central British Columbia, Terrill Welch was invited into an adult painting class when she was fourteen years old. Terrill Welch has taken several college-level courses in drawing and painting. She now teaches the art of oil painting from life in natural light using water mixable oils both in-person and internationally online.
Creative Resources - Wendy Gardner
Wendy is a community arts advocate who works to find creative opportunities to enhance the incubation of creative ideas and develop platforms to help generate engagement in dynamic artistic persuits. She published SHOWCASE in 2016 which was a not-for-profit, socially financed pilot project that brought together businesses, organizations and the arts with the purpose of creating a locally produced, cost effective inter-island promotional magazine for the Southern Gulf Islands.
Wendy has been a Director of the SGIAC for four years, currently serves as President for the regional board and President for the Pender branch. She is also the Chair for Ptarmigan Music and Theatre Society. She served as the Economic Development Commissioner for Pender for two years. When afforded the time Wendy can be found in her studio painting or sclupting.
